Casualty wins NTA

Updated: May 19, 2018

Casualty saw off strong competition from Cold Feet, Game of Thrones, Happy Valley and The Night Manager to win Best Drama at this year's National Television Awards last night.

The show's stars, including Amanda Mealing, Cathy Shipton, Lloyd Everitt, Jay Griffiths, Tony Marshall, Jason Durr, Richard Winsor, William Beck and Michael Stevenson, hit the red carpet at London's O2 arena for last night's ceremony.

Amanda Mealing, who plays Connie Beauchamp in the show, led the cast and crew onstage to accept the award and thanks fans for their support. "Thank you very, very much all of you who voted for us. We've been going for 30 years, some of you have been watching from the very start and some of you are new. You are strong, you are true, you are faithful."

“It was a very tough category but what a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary," added Cathy Shipton, who plays Duffy. "Thank you everyone who has been in it and all of you for keeping us there.”

"It’s a truly amazing honour for all of us involved in Casualty to receive the award for Best Drama," Head of Continuing Drama Series, BBC Studios, Oliver Kent told us later. "Particularly given that we were up against excellent competition. The fact that the award was voted for by our audience makes it even more special. On behalf of the whole Casualty family, I’d like to thank the viewers for their support and votes."
