Holby Review Series 20 Episode 11- The L Word

Roxanna starts the episode for us, the neurosurgeon is sat in her office writing in a notepad, before ripping the page out and scrunching it up into a ball, putting it with her other obviously unsuccessful attempts that litter her desk, writing again she rips this page of her notepad out, folds it up and then leaves her office.

Switch to Dom and Lofty entering the building, Dom happens to coin the phrase 'the man you love' to Lofty when speaking, which he quickly retracts when he sees Lofty's expression, slip of the tongue maybe, or maybe not?

Gaskell and Roxanna are on the ward talking, Oliver looking out the window nearby, she is talking about the fact the university is dedicating a lab to David and she is due to speak at the ceremony, that explains the paper scrunching not long ago then. Gaskell makes it clear that Oliver doesn't need another setback in his recovery now that he's due to start the new treatment with Roxanna today, the blonde assuring the Professor that there won't be one.

Sheilagh is back on Darwin with what they suspect is an embolism, and they make the elderly woman aware that if the anticoagulants they are going to try don't work, then it might be a surgery if that's viable, Frieda being the one to deliver the news in her to the point and no frills approach, the news fills Lofty with a sense of dread, knowing that there's a possibility that he could lose his grandma in the worse case scenario.

Donna and Fletch are on AAU discussing their attempts at locating nurse Amira who was the nurse on shift when Ric was and maybe being the one, vital person to help clear his name and get him a not guilty verdict at his pending trial. Fletch says that it's like a needle in a haystack and he's not been able to find anything, much to the disappointment of Donna.

Xavier is unsuccessful at winning Serena round with the gift of a doughnut, the acting CEO telling him to give it to a nurse, also informing him that Nicky will be helping him run the AAU whilst she is in and out of theatre most of the day, he tries to say he doesn't need any help, but she bluntly tells him that she is mentoring him because she's in charge, whilst he mentors Nicky and that's just how it is, giving the nearby Nicky a knowing smile as she heads off. No messing with Serena today, not even from Xavier.

Gaskell offers to step in for Roxanna in regards to Oliver, because he says he thinks that maybe they're getting too close in a doctor and patient capacity, she tells him that it's fine and it's just because he's seen her the most since his brain injury, why would Gaskell want to step in, something in it for him?

Sheilagh drops the bombshell on Dom when he comes back to the side room in Darwin she's been put in, that she wants to sign a do not resuscitate order if anything was to happen in regards to the embolism she's now been diagnosed with, he's shocked at her making such a decision on her own and without even mentioning anything to Lofty, he tries to tell her not to go making such a choice so soon, but she seems set on said decision.

Fletch has been able to find an email address via the nursing agency for the 'vanishing' Amira much to the delight of Donna, the pair concoct a plan to send the nurse an email to let her know she's owed money and that she can collect it at Holby, hoping she'll take the bait and appear at the hospital.

The second round of treatment is a go for Oliver, the doctor asking the neurosurgeon for longer this time since he responded so well the first time, Roxanna seems unsure if she should, but he says if she wants him to get better then she'll do it. Not long later after his second treatment, he's speaking to Dom and says that he knows and can tell his friend is in love with Lofty and that he's not very good at denying it either, much to Dom's embarrassment.

Amira appears, pulled in by the lure of fake owed money in the email, after talking for a short while in the office to Donna and Fletch, realising there is no money after Donna comes clean about what this is all about, the former nurse, which she tells both of them is now the case, that she doesn't really remember much about that day and that she's not about to get caught up in anything like this with Ric, before promptly leaving the room and then the ward.

At Pulses collecting a quick coffee, Gaskell asks Roxanna why she didn't tell him about the memorial and also why doesn't she pass Oliver's care and treatment onto him, that she's done lots of overtime recently, putting all her time into Oliver, passing some patients on her colleagues so she can continue to help him. She quickly dismisses his suggestion and says she can handle treating Oliver herself and the rest of everything else at the moment.

On the ward after having his treatment, Oliver gets confused and thinks he's in love with Roxanna which he promptly declares to the ward, mixing up her for Zosia who was the actual woman he was in love with, after a brief dismissal at his declaration, the blonde looks a little distressed at his words and says she has to go, quickly leaving the ward, Oliver's words seeming to have hit a raw nerve in the neurosurgeon.

Back on Darwin Sheilagh's lung has collapsed leading to the elderly patient struggling to breathe, this causing Dom to panic thinking that she might be dying and there's nothing to be done due to the do not resuscitate order, luckily they're able to insert and chest drain and stabilise her, much to Dom's obvious relief.

At Henrik's house, Roxanna is visiting him, the on leave CEO is obviously torturing himself over the events of Holby recently, he's feeling guilty over everything that's happened, blaming himself for Fredriks actions, saying it's his fault because Fredrik was his son, Roxanna tries to assure him it's not his fault, that he couldn't have known nor prevented what he did, that she understands his feelings of guilt, due to David and what happened to him maybe? They go on to discuss their youth as junior doctors as they share a drink of whiskey, and how when she met David and went on their first date that she knew he was the one, she also informs Henrik that he's a good man with good qualities and that all of them at Holby need him.

Amira returns to the car park in Holby and Donna sees her, she informs the staff nurse that she will testify at Ric's trial, leaving Donna with a look of relief on her face as Amira walks away.

With and empty and clean theatre 1, Roxanna and Oliver are here together discussing that Oliver now knows he got confused and knows it was Zosia it was who he was in love with, Roxanna apologises for not telling him about the whole shooting incident sooner and that this is partly to do with the fact she finds it too painful to talk about and relive, Oliver says he understands her reasons for this. She then goes on to tell Oliver about the shooting and everything surrounding that, including him operating on David and what subsequently happened when Fredrik entered the theatre, Oliver starts to remember and hear glimpses of what happened that day, Roxanna explains she's been feeling guilty because she didn't try harder to save David and that her helping Oliver has been to try and make up for this somewhat, but that she still believes the treatment is right for him and if he wants Gaskell to take over she understands, but Oliver declines, saying he still wants her to be his doctor. She then goes on to tell him that his act of taking the bullet that day is because he's a selfless, kind and brave person, leading them both to hold one another's hand over the operating table.

Sheilagh is feeling better after her chest drain and Lofty says he's going to make sure she gets to go home when she's able to leave hospital, also she wants to be around to see how Dom and Lofty work out, adding in to ask when their next date is going to be, Dom says at Albie's that night where there is karaoke going on which they attend, leaving a short while later and sit outside the hospital to discuss things between them, Dom letting Lofty know that him saying he loved him yesterday wasn't a mistake but it was at a bad time, Lofty says he isn't ready to say it back yet, but Dom says that's ok, both of them sitting holding hands together on the bench in a comfortable silence, with smiles on their faces.

Roxanna is back in the operating theatre she was recently in with Oliver, but this time she's alone, a look of apprehension and fear over her face as she steps in, taking a breath before making her way to the operating table, in a voice over as she makes her way over, she talks about David and how he was taken from her too soon, that they now won't get the chance to grow old together, but now she must find a way to go on without him, to make his death into a thing of hope and not sadness, the camera cuts to her leaning on the operating table and breaking down into tears, the grief and feelings of her loss pouring out of her, this continuing as we are led towards the doors of the theatre to leave.

In the final shot, Henrik is tidying up his desk at home, when on removing one of the papers on there he looks down to see a note that Roxanna has left for him, on it she has written 'I'm here when you're ready to talk. R x' with that another awesome episode is at an end, one that has given us more of a glimpse into the battle within Roxanna and her vulnerability we'd not really seen before now.
