Holby City Review S20 E17- The Way We Were.

The episode for this week starts rather calmly, the camera is immediately showing bedroom with someone asleep, this someone being Frieda, her phone suddenly starting to ring on her bedside cabinet which she answers sleepily, before then getting up and answering the door to a mystery man who greets her with 'Surprise', the question is who is he and what does he want?

Dom and Lofty arrive together outside Holby in a taxi, both of them sharing a kiss and holding hands, it seems things are working out well for them both at the moment, obviously spending quality time together too, they look happy walking in together and not fussed or bothered about who might see them together, more interested in each other than other people.

With the mystery man now in Freida's kitchen and the two of them talking, Nicky comes in from what appears to be a night out and looks at the mystery 'guest' before she awkwardly has an exchange with Frieda, in which the older woman scalds her for being back at this hour in the morning when she's got to be up soon to go to work, telling her in no uncertain terms that this kind of behaviour isn't good for a wanna be doctor, between them they then discover that the man has a nasty and rather deep wound on his back that does require hospital treatment which Nicky suggests, but the man won't hear of it and is steadfast in his decision that he's not going to hospital, something to hide has he and where did that injury come from?

A face Dom knows appears on AAU, Susan Beckett, she says she's now a writer of non fiction which she makes clear, currently she says she's writing about abuse in relationships, the topic seems to hit a nerve with Dom, which in turns makes Lofty asks if he's ok, Dom says he is, but is he fully ok given what he's just heard?

Roman in the man who has turned up at Frieda's flat, but on disclosing this, she tells Nicky to say nothing, what could this reason be, is he wanted by someone?

Xavier is on Keller this week, sat next to Sacha at the nurses' station at the beginning of his shift, the older man checking his funding page for his project, but sees only his mum has donated the fifty pounds he's currently raised and no other new donations have been added since, he looks a little disappointed and down at what he's seen, his attention then turning to Henrik who is on the ward for his first day back at the hospital and he informs Sacha that he wants to dive straight in, will he be allowed to since he's working under Sacha.

Susan's scan has come back to show that she's got cirrhosis of the liver, Dom says to Donna that he didn't expect this result to come back and looks genuinely shocked, after talking to Susan, she informs him that she has hepatitis c and that she was diagnosed after her motorbike accident in Thailand, the conversation then turning to the book she's currently working on and that it's about an abuser, Dom quickly lets her know that he doesn't want to read it, Susan goes on to show him a pic of the author who turns out to be Issac, causing Dom to walk out of the ward. Lofty finds him not long later in the locker room, and says that he knows about the book and that if Dom needs to speak to someone else about it then he should, Dom says that it's all fine and smiles, but is this just a line that he's telling Lofty?

Frieda is make up free at work probably for the first time ever and is investigating how a patient got TB, she questions the woman's work and finds out her occupation is working on or having contact with building sites, could this be the root cause.

Ringing Roman who is still at her flat, she checks in with him to see how he is with his wound, he says he's fine and that he can't go back to where he's come from, also that he's ok and feeling ok with his wound, but his face says different.

After getting his hands on the manuscript and research folder that Susan is working on with the Issac book and heading to the staircase with it, Lofty finds him and sees what he has, quickly telling him that he can't argue about it with her because she's a patient, realising Lofty is right, Dom reveals to his partner that he doesn't think he can ever be happy and that he thinks Lofty would be better off without him, before leaving for theatre and Susan's operation, what now for the pair, is Dom just going to give them up?

It turns out Frieda knows Roman from medical school and they might have a bit of history together before it seemed to fade out or turn sour.

With Lofty joining Dom in Susan's operation, Dom gets distracted by the events of today and cuts himself, leading Lofty to ask for Serena to be paged to take over from Dom.

Serena and Dom talk in her office after the surgery, with her reassuring him not to worry and that they'll do everything they can to help him, and if it turns out he now has hepatitis c that it's not the life sentence it was years ago.

Susan is back on the ward and recovering, leading Dom to be unable to help himself in going to talk to her about the book, letting her know that what she's working on is fantasy and that it's not real, that she should in fact tell the true stories, during the discussion that gets a little heated on Dom's side, she collapses and Serena has to step in and take charge of the situation, letting Dom know that he shouldn't be near Susan.

Henrik and Sacha are discussing patient Ismail and his operation that Henrik is meant to be doing, Sacha has tried to only let Henrik take light duties during the day, not letting him do too much and generally fussing around him, eventually having had enough when Sacha tries to step in again with Ismail, Henrik has had enough and says to Sacha that if he thinks he's not fit for the job then he'd rather him say so, walking away from his friend down the ward.

Having sent Nicky on a literal mission to help and treat Roman because she herself can't leave the ward because she's needed here, Frieda is sat in an empty and quiet, also free operating theatre away from the ward and prying ears and eyes on a video call to both Nicky and Roman back at the flat, the young F1 having agreed to be the one to go back to the flat and treat Roman's wound that was getting worst and turning into sepsis, the younger woman is nervous about doing the procedure but Frieda reassures her and says she can do it, guiding her through what to do.

Henrik and Sacha make up as friends in the staff room, with Henrik saying that he wants to be part of the team, this leads to Sacha giving him the on call surgery folders for tomorrow and informing his friend that he's glad that he's on board, both men sharing a smile, the days events forgotten and a fresh start for the next day.

At the end of their shifts, Dom and Donna are sat at a side entrance outside the hospital talking, she tells him that he can talk to any of his friends and colleagues and that they'll listen and understand.

Back at the flat, Nicky passes Roman off as her friend when Xavier and Meena are going out to cover up for Freida and help her out that way, Frieda then praises Nicky for the procedure she did before on Roman, Nicky looking quite pleased with the praise from her friend and older mentor.

Dom goes and speaks to Sacha about what's happened during the day and the book that's being published, also that he doesn't know how to make him and Lofty work, Sacha says that he should let Lofty decide who he wants to be with, maybe a nod for Dom to give Lofty the chance to choose if he wants to be with Dom and also for Dom not to push him away, before both friends share a hug, something Dom seems to have been in need of all day.

Back at the flat Roman and Frieda talk about his options now that he's been treated by Nicky and herself, she tells him that he must go, which leads him to ask if she's turning him away, Freida says he has go, reluctantly he gets his things and leaves, whilst watching Frieda takes a hitching breath, does she actually still love him despite all of the things that have happened between them?

Henrik is now finishing his shift and goes to see Sacha at the computer at the nurses' station, he checks his funding page and an anonymous donor has donated £20,000 in the course of the day much to his surprise, Henrik has a little smile at the fact that his friend has gained more funding for his medical project, before taking a biscuit from the tin Sacha had brought in this morning for them to share and then leaving to go home, has he been the one who had donated such a large amount to help his friend, hence his smile??

As he's leaving the hospital grounds finally for the day and heading across the car park, Dom sees Lofty who is also leaving, superb timing boys happiness timing, Lofty says that he wants himself and Dom to be a team, to which Dom apologies for pushing him away today and this leads Lofty to let him know that he's not going anywhere, cue a happy and reassured smile from Dom, nice going Lofty! With hands linked together, both men leave the hospital together, ending the day as they started, added smiles too.

For the end of the episode we're back at the flat of the girls, Frieda once again thanks Nicky for today, before both of them take up seats at the kitchen island and they start practising the procedure that Nicky did on Roman earlier in the day on a piece of meat that Frieda has, well practice makes perfect after all doesn't it. Bringing to close another episode full of emotions, twists and turns and it's all leading very nicely to next weeks, who knows what the writers have in store for us...bring on next week!
